TUFFED WEAR
OUR MATERIALS
In an everyday life with an increasing focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly choices, we want to make it a little easier to maneuver through our garments and sort out the materials they are made of. There is a lot to think about, and we are constantly working to improve ourselves and find environmentally friendly alternatives, but are open to the fact that in some areas we still have a way to go. Here is a small overview of all the materials we use, and why we use these in particular.
Remember to check the label to see what your garments are made of, and to make a better choice with regard to the environment.
Bamboo is rapidly renewable, it is efficient in terms of water and land use, and it does not require the use of pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Bamboo viscose falls between the natural fiber and synthetic categories. It is a reconstructed fiber in which a plant's natural cellulose has been extracted via a chemical process, and this has been spun into a material that can be used for textile production. We certify all bamboo viscose products according to the Oeko-tex® 100 standard, which guarantees that the material is free of harmful chemicals.
Our garments with bamboo viscose: College jumpers, hoodies, sweatpants, pyjamas, print t-shirts, Bambull® and Bambull® Blend.
Lyocell is the process bamboo goes through to become fiber: a closed loop system with only organic solvents. By using a lyocell process, we significantly reduce water use by recycling and reusing the water and solvent until it is empty. The ecological solution used is called N-Methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO). The end result is a natural and soft fiber completely free of harmful residual chemicals.
Our garments with bamboo lyocell: all clothes made from SoftBoost® (boxers, hipsters, thongs, socks, t-shirts and tank tops), Light wool and Bambull® Blend
The registered trademark of lyocell. Lyocell is wood pulp from sustainable sources and a renewable resource, as described above under Bamboo lyocell. All lyocell from Tencel is biodegradable and compostable. All trees used in production come from sustainable forest plantations with either FSC® or PEFC®.
Our garments with Tencel: Green City Tee and Sustainabili-Tee.
Modal is reconstructed wood-based cellulose fiber: super soft with a high wet modulus and high wear resistance. The wood is sourced from farms that practice sustainable forestry, and the fiber itself is environmentally friendly and certified safe from harmful chemicals.
Our garments with modal fibres: all clothes made from SoftBoost® (boxers, hipsters, thongs, socks, t-shirts and tank tops), Bambull® Blend and Light Wool.
Grown without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides. This means that production promotes and improves biodiversity and biological cycles. It improves the soil and often uses less water than regular cotton.
Our garments with organic cotton: College jumpers, hoodies, sweatpants, pyjamas, print t-shirts, Green City Tees, Sustainabili-Tees, as well as all our Outdoor products (Jacket, Anorak, Pants and Leisure Pants).
Made from either used clothing or surplus from textile production, which is then shredded and spun into new yarn and material. This helps to reduce the use of regular cotton and reduces the use of water, landfill space and other consequences of cotton cultivation.
Our garments with recycled cotton: Green City Tee and Sustainabili-Tee.
Combed cotton is softer than regular cotton. That's because it has no impurities or short protruding threads, and it's stronger than regular cotton because the combing process removes short fibers, which are prone to breakage. After being combed, the fibers are bound together more tightly, leading to less fraying and ripping. These advantages, plus the extra work required during the production process, make combed cotton more expensive and more luxurious than regular cotton.
Our garments with Combed cotton: Medium Merino socks.
Our garments with bamboo viscose: College jumpers, hoodies, sweatpants, pyjamas, print t-shirts, Bambull® and Bambull® Blend.
Merino wool is super light, soft, does not get sticky, retains warmth in the cold and is cooling in the heat, and has anti-odor properties. The wool is naturally renewable, recyclable and degradable. We only use merino wool from farms in Australia that do not engage in mulesing. Wool is always 18.5 microns or lower to guarantee softness and comfort.
Our garments with merino wool: Bambull®, Bambull® Blend, Light Wool, Merino socks and Wool Fleece.
Our garments with bamboo lyocell: all clothes made from SoftBoost® (boxers, hipsters, thongs, socks, t-shirts and tank tops), Light wool and Bambull® Blend
Lamb's wool is the soft wool from lambs the first time they are shorn, and is sheep's wool of the highest quality. The diameter of the wool is finer and the wool requires minimal processing. The wool is naturally renewable, recyclable and degradable.
All our down is RDS-certified down from greylag goose. At every stage of the supply chain where animals are present, the standard's requirements ensure that the animal's five freedoms are fulfilled, including live picking and force feeding. The down we use is also a by-product from the food industry, so we ensure that the whole animal benefits and is not wasted.
Our garments with Gray Goose Down: Hybrid Down Jacket and Light Down Hooded Jacket.
Recycled polyester causes less pollution of air, water and soil compared to regular polyester – it also keeps bottles and other plastic objects away from the filling. Recycling polyester also means that we do not contribute to the influx of more plastic.
Our garments with recycled polyester: The training clothes in the Active collection .
bluesign® is a certification that guarantees production with the lowest possible impact on people and the environment, and ensures responsible use of resources. When a product is marked with bluesign®, it means that the entire factory and its employees have been certified according to bluesign®.
Bluesign polyamide, a synthetic fiber similar to polyester, where the factory is certified according to the bluesign® standard, which means that all production has the lowest possible impact on people and the environment.
Our garments with bluesign® polyamide: Hiking Tights.
polyester where the factory is certified according to the bluesign® standard, which means that all production has the lowest possible impact on people and the environment.
Our garments with recycled polyester: Hybrid Down Jacket and Light Down Hooded Jacket.
Nylon where the factory is certified according to the bluesign® standard, which means that all production has the lowest possible impact on people and the environment.
Our garments with bluesign® nylon: Hybrid Down Jacket and Light Down Hooded Jacket.
a more environmentally friendly way to use nylon is to reuse old nylon. This leads to less pollution of air, water and soil compared to pure nylon, and it helps to keep plastic objects away from the filling. Recycling nylon also means that we do not contribute to the influx of more nylon.
Our garments with recycled nylon: Tufte Hiking Tights .
A type of nylon.
Our garments with Chinlon: Hybrid Down Jacket and Light Down Hooded Jacket.
a synthetic fiber made from oil. Nylon is light, smooth and very strong and resistant to moisture. We use nylon in our socks, and are constantly working to find good environmentally friendly substitutes for synthetic materials, which can be both difficult and time-consuming. For the time being, we therefore use nylon.
a highly elastic synthetic textile fiber, which can be stretched six to seven times its own length. We use elastane in small quantities to make the garments more elastic and comfortable, and to ensure that the garments retain their shape after use. We are constantly working to find good environmentally friendly substitutes for synthetic materials, which can be both difficult and time-consuming. For the time being, we therefore use elastane.
Spandex is a brand name for elastane, with the same properties as described for elastane.
